Fabric production and processing are the two most significant contributors to environment degradation in the fashion supply chain.
For example, most of cotton agriculture causes soil degradation from excessive water use, habitat loss from area expansion and pollution through chemically intensive crop production.
Cotton grows on only 2.4% of global cropland, it accounts for 22.5% of the world’s insecticide use—more than any other single crop—and 10% of all pesticide use.
Cotton is also a water-intensive crop; some estimates suggest that 713 gallons (2,700 liters) of water are needed to produce one T-shirt.
